ARTISTIC STATEMENT

I am a dancer and an artist. My undergraduate degree is a B.A in Dance with a minor in Theater from Dean College. I have always considered the two disciplines interchangeable when considering an occupation. It wasn't until my Dance Composition classes when I realized that artistry can come from so many different avenues. I have been trying to find a way to combine both dance and theater together. Whether thats joining a company or actually creating my own company that has all of the elements that Im looking for in my dance career. I want to reach people through my movement and to create stories that have a solid meaning in the lives of others. The thought of having dance removed from my life is the worst thing in the world. I’ve experienced a world without dance for a brief period in my life and I really do not want to visit that again. Dance has given me opportunities that no other occupation could give me. It also has opened my mind to different possibilities and avenues as to how my future could be. It has made me realize just how connected the world is to dance and how much the arts in general can change us for better or worse. It can shed light on the different hardships that are affecting everyone all over the world or just in one specific country. It can also so the kindness that is within the human race as long as we believe that its within ourselves. Overall, I just want to create and be creative. I want to incorporate my love for dance into other avenues of my life that can enhance my view of the world. Theater is one avenue that I really want to try to gain strength in. It shows how vulnerable a person must be to portray a specific character. It's a challenge that I am ready for and I am willing to put in just as must work for that as I do for my dance projects.

Philanthropy

I also have a love for philanthropy and charity work. Whether it is to give to a specific charity or to just hold the door open for someone. Dance can play a big role in this area. Many companies out there are affiliated with a multitude of charities, each representing a specific cause. Just knowing that I had an affect on someones life is more meaningful to me than being in a “well known” company. While the “real world” is just full of unknown journeys and adventures, dance is the one thing that feels familiar and safe to me. I know when I enter a dance class what is expected of me and how I’m supposed to act. Dance has given me so much confidence in myself that I do not think that I could have gained it from any other medium. The importance that dance has in my life becomes more prominent as each day goes on. There aren’t enough words to describe how important dance is to me, not just as a career choice, but even on a personal level.
